Marco Sommerfeld wins the Sport Class at the Swiss Cup Grindelwald
The GTO 3 takes victory in Sport Class and places 5th overall among CCC competition gliders
Last weekend, from April 25th to 26th, the Swiss Cup Grindelwald took place in Grindelwald, Switzerland, bringing together a strong field of pilots for two exciting and demanding race tasks.
Pilots were greeted with strong thermals, high cloud base reaching up to 3500 m, and fast conditions that allowed for long and dynamic flights. The first task, a 106 km race, saw impressive speeds and a high number of pilots reaching goal. The second day featured a more technical 76.9 km task, with challenging start conditions and an interesting route through the surrounding valleys.
At the Swiss Cup in Grindelwald, we were able to fly two tasks in beautiful weather in the stunning setting of Grindelwald. The first task had very challenging conditions, but I didn’t have to circle in thermals below 5 m/s. That helped me achieve an average speed of 45 km/h over 106 km, my personal record. The second day was less demanding, but mentally it was a constant up and down. All the more I’m glad that my patience paid off in the end. A great feeling.
